Dairy-Free Boozy Milkshake Recipes

Until four years ago, I only ate ice cream during a self-proclaimed “Ice Cream Season,” meaning Memorial Day to Labor Day. By the laws of bygone etiquette, if I could wear white shoes, I could eat ice cream. But after a health scare, I realized life is too short. And since I like ice cream, I should eat ice cream when I want, regardless of what the calendar said.

It became a ritual: my husband and I would each have a bowl of ice cream while watching a movie together a couple times a week.

Things changed again about a year ago when my husband cut most dairy from his diet. So, I’d enjoy ice cream alone, and he would have a cocktail during our movie nights.

When I tried Hudsonville Dairy-Free flavors, a lightbulb went off: what about something my husband and I could both enjoy that combined our nightly treats?

What about a BOOZY MILKSHAKE?!

Boozy milkshakes are a fantastically refreshing combination of frozen treat and alcohol. They are the best of both worlds: a little alcohol and the sweet taste of ice cream all in one. It’s kind of the perfect, unwind-after-the-kids-are-in-bed treat for mom and dad. And it’s definitely become one of my favorite ways to indulge.

Here are a couple of our favorite boozy milkshake recipes, featuring the delicious, midwest-made Hudsonville Ice Cream. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Almond Haze Dairy-free Boozy Milkshake

Boozy shake with Hudsonville ice cream (Birthday Cake)

Almond Haze

3 scoops Hudsonville Dairy-Free Birthday Cake Ice Cream

½ ounce Amaretto

½ ounce coconut rum (Malibu)

½ ounce crème de cacao (the clear kind)

3-4 ice cream scoops of frozen blueberries

Put ingredients into the blender with the frozen blueberries closest to the blade. (I used a smoothie blender, so the blueberries were the last ingredients. If you’re using a traditional blender, you may need to put the blueberries in first.) Use a few short pulses to chop the blueberries and mix ingredients. Do not over blend/pulse! Less is more because you can always stir the ingredients together. Pour into a glass and add whipped cream and sprinkles. (Note: I like to use a frozen glass for my milkshakes. To make this one even more special, wet the rim of the glass with a dairy-free milk, then dip into a plateful of sprinkles before freezing.)

Chocolate Cherry Cheer Dairy-free Boozy Milkshake

Hudsonville boozy shake (cherry fudge)

Chocolate Cherry Cheer

3 scoops Hudsonville Traverse City Cherry Fudge Ice Cream or Dairy-Free Cherry Fudge Ice Cream

½ ounce Chambord

½ ounce crème de cacao (the clear kind)

6-8 frozen pitted cherries

Put the ingredients into the blender with the frozen cherries closest to the blade. Use a few short bursts to chop the cherries and mix ingredients. Do not over blend/pulse! Less is more because you can always stir the ingredients together. Pour into a glass (I like to freeze mine before pouring the milkshake into it.) and add whipped cream and a cherry on the rim of the glass.

Note: These recipes can also be made without the alcohol. Simply omit the alcohol and substitute a milk or milk-alternative.

Note about using dairy-free ice cream in a milkshake: The consistency is softer than traditional ice creams, so I’ve used frozen fruit to compensate and thicken the shake. Feel free to experiment with different frozen fruits to really make these your own!
