Meal Kit Delivery Review: Feelin’ like a boss in the kitchen.

It is here! I’ve been asked, and now it’s delivered…. literally. Which meal kit stands above the rest?

I love food, flavors, and cultural experiences.  I also love a well-packaged meal kit, cooking, learning new skills, feeling like I’m in Masterchef, and most of all…not having to think of what to make for dinner.

About 2 years ago, I started venturing into meal kits, and now when I see the box at my door “Space Jam” soundtrack goes off in my head because I get so jacked.  I love the flexibility of these subscriptions. I fluctuate between using a service weekly if it is a busy month or an occasional “treat yourself” week.  After lots of experimenting, I finally found one to really call home that turns out even more affordable than grocery shopping at times.

Below you will find my feedback and ratings from least to most preferred.  Please remember this is my personal reference, and something else may work better for others.

A fun added element: I really enjoy cooking to music, so each subscription kit is paired with a song to sum up the vibe.

  • Home Chef “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It” – R.E.M

    • Meal Options: 3/10
Very basic, standard meals–lacked any exciting flavor or unique twist.
    • Packaging: 7/10
Ingredients were not as clear for which meal. It did, however, come with a binder, and the recipes are hole-punched.
    • Directions/Steps: 4/10
Too many words to read not clear on steps.
    • Cost: 9/10
Very cheap. I quickly realized…you get what you pay.
    • Yum Factor: 2/10
Very bland, nothing flavorful.  You could do better just using Pinterest and a grocery list (that may even still be more exciting).  It lacked excitement and just served the eating purpose.

RATING: 5/10
ADDITIONAL INFO: I canceled my subscription after the first meal

  • Sun Basket “Crash Into Me” – Dave Matthews Band

    • Meal Options: 8/10
Good variety of options. Feels very clean and healthy
    • Packaging: 6/10
Meals were separated, which is always a bonus, but the box always smelled funky.
    • Directions/Steps: 7/10
Very wordy, I like a good step by step
    • Cost: 4/10
It was the MOST expensive, and I didn’t feel it was worth it.
    • Yum Factor: 6/10
It was good, felt a bit earthy, just not what I like at the end of a long day.

RATING: 6.2/10
ADDITIONAL INFO: I didn’t save a single recipe (that says a lot)

  • Hello Fresh ”Here Comes the Sun” – The Beatles

    • Meal Options: 8/10
      Decent GF and Vegan options.
    • Packaging: 8/10
All ingredients were bagged together, but you needed many more ingredients from home and a lot of dishes.
    • Directions/Steps: 6/10
Wordy and not clear on decoding steps.
    • Cost: 7/10
Decent price, but it just wasn’t as impressive.
    • Yum Factor: 7/10
It didn’t wow me, and after a handful of these services, some really stand out more than others.

RATING: 7.2/10
ADDITIONAL INFO: Only saved 1 meal

  • Green Chef: “Appletree” – Erykah Badu

    • Meal Options: 8/10
Great Gluten-Free, Keto, and Paleo options.
    • Packaging: 9/10
I love how it already comes separated into a bag and the garlic peeled and portioned.
    • Directions/Steps: 9/10
Easy and simple to follow, clear list of home items and allergens
    • Cost: 8/10
Cost is comparable to what quality you get and the option to get 3 or 4 meals a week.
    • Yum Factor: 9/10
Very delicious. Feels as healthy as it seems but still great flavor. It just feels good all around.

RATING: 8.8/10

  • Blue Apron You Are The Best Thing” – Ray LaMontagne

    • Meal Options: 9/10
Incredible meals. I just wish there were GF or Vegan options to filter.
    • Packaging: 8/10
I had to reach out 2x for spilled items when the box arrived.  HOWEVER, they always compensated with a new free meal or refund.  I really enjoyed the little bottles of liquids.
    • Directions/Steps: 10/10
I love the checklist approach versus lots of reading. (I believe they went away from the checklist-style now, though). Used the least amount of dishes.
    • Cost: 7/10
One of the pricier services but always worth the flavors.  I like this one if making a meal for others or a fancy at-home date.
    • Yum Factor: 11/10
THE BEST FLAVORS the cost just caused me to only use it for “treating myself” versus a weekly go-to.

RATING: 9/10
ADDITIONAL INFO: Saved 26 recipes! If you love a party in your mouth…this is your company. It also introduced me to my new favorite seasoning: togarashi, and a passion for sesame oil.

  • Every Plate “Where Have You Been” – Rihanna

    • Meal Options: 9/10
A lot of great meals. Struggle to always love the descriptions, but they always end up amazing.
    • Packaging: 8/10
All items are just in the box, so I go through them on the delivery day and separate them into my own bags. Only 1 garlic is sent for all the meals.
    • Directions/Steps: 9/10
I love the recipe card size, simple handheld.
    • Cost: 10/10
I cannot beat this price for the amazing meals. This has been my longer living subscription and my weekly go-to.  Roughly $38/week for 3 meals (6 portions total)
    • Yum Factor: 10/10
I have not had a bad meal yet. Some even surprised me.  I also love a great “bowl,” and these are packed with so much flavor and variety in each bite.

RATING: 9.2/10
ADDITIONAL INFO: It uses more dishes, but overall my favorite service, and I owe that thanks to my sister for passing it along to me to try it out.

  • For the most part, you get what you pay (a couple of exceptions)
  • You will always have leftover garlic (except with Green Chef)
  • Easy to remove ingredients since everything is cooking from the starting point (I’m highly allergic to onions)
  • Set a reminder on your phone to select your meals for upcoming weeks unless you like to play meal delivery roulette.
  • Great use to impress a partner, date, or even yourself.
  • The majority of services have options to double the portions.
  • All services have great intro promotions.
  • Save the ones you love, so easy to go back and recreate.
  • Try something new and HAVE FUN.

If you are looking for a nice work-from-home lunch, a delicious dinner, or just need to feel like a boss, I encourage you to try out a service.  Also, parenting hack, it’s a great way to do something fun and educational with your kids.  My daughter doesn’t always eat the same stuff. She has her staple meals. This makes for a fun time in the kitchen, and teaches her skills to carry on.

Also, don’t get it twisted, when it’s just me in the kitchen..there I am…. music on, wine in hand, and impressing Gordon Ramsay with my audition plate.
