Weekends feel extra special to me now that I’m a working mom. It’s my time to spend as much of the day with my kiddo as possible. While I love hanging out in our house, or local park, I try to make it a point to get out and do one fun thing each day together. Recently, we went to listen to Blaskapelle Milwaukee at Kegel’s Inn with my sister and cousin. What’s more Milwaukee than celebrating our rich German culture?
Blaskapelle Milwaukee is a brass band of Wisconsin musicians who travel the state (and country!) bringing German music to the people. They’re starting their Oktoberfest circuit now, so there are plenty of opportunities to check them out.

The event was completely family-friendly, at least during the afternoon while we were there. Kegel’s Inn was hosting the West Milwaukee Lion’s Club Oktoberfest, which really wasn’t more than an outdoor picnic with great live music. For an event that only cost $5, to clap and dance around with your kiddos, you don’t need much else. If you’re like me and not very knowledgeable about Blasmusik, it sounds like different variations of polka music – pretty much the best kind of music for a clapping-obsessed kid to enjoy. We ate some bun-less brats, and gazed longingly at everyone drinking the gluten-filled beer. We saw some little babies in carriers, and older kids in their dirndls and lederhosen. Everyone seemed to enjoy the music, especially when the band walked around while they played!
Rosalia clapped, and loved staring at the musicians, and the other kids there. Based on the nap she took after that, I’d say it was a successful and meaningful outing for her. PROST!
