In celebration of Mother’s Day, here is my love letter to the most influential woman in my life. Thank you, Mom.
I am more than halfway through my fourth and final pregnancy. The past eight years have been the most rewarding and most challenging years of my life. I have loved my journey into motherhood, even with the mom-guilt and sleepless nights. And through it all, I find myself understanding and appreciating my own mom even more than ever before.
Thank you, Mom, for giving me the best example of what it takes to be a loving wife. Thank you for showing me that “real love” is kind, patient, consistent, and honest. That through the ups and downs of life, through sickness and health, over forty-two years, love is still there, ever present. Thank you for loving my husband, too, and welcoming him so completely into our family.
Thank you, Mom, for being my role model of a working mother. Thank you for teaching me that moms can have goals and a strong work ethic outside of the home. Thank you for showing me that I can work full-time and still be devoted to my children. Thank you for working nights and weekends while I was growing up so that you could be there for concerts, practices, and games. And thank you for teaching me the importance of, “I’m just resting my eyes,” at such a young age.
Thank you for making me learn how to write a thank you note, to sincerely say “I’m sorry,” and to answer the phone properly.
Thank you, Mom, for being my own personal nurse for my entire life. Thank you for taking care of me when I didn’t feel well growing up. Thank you for driving me to all of my scoliosis appointments and insisting I wear my back brace and stand up straight. Thank you for comforting me and for reassuring me in my weakest moments. Thank you for letting me pick up the phone or drive across town to your house with my own sick children for that same comfort and reassurance today.
Thank you for being the very best grandma! Thank you for watching my girls and for going on bear hunts and bird walks with them. Thank you for kissing away their tears and for spoiling them with your love. Thank you for building new traditions with them that I know they will remember forever.
Thank you, Mom, for shaping me into the woman, wife, and mom that I am today. I am so grateful that I got you as my mom. I love you.
Happy Mother’s Day.
