Hi! I’m Jackie, MKE Moms Blog contributor since 2016, and mom to four kiddos ages 6 to 13. I’m turning 45 years old this month, and I’ve been a firm believer in a quick, easy skincare routine, which basically means a cleanser (morning and most, but not all, nights) and a moisturizer with weekly “fun” paper face masks. Also, I complain about my dry skin and my occasional breakouts, but I’ve never really sought to do anything about it.
Starting My Journey with Bonness Skincare
When I was approached for this 90-day project, I jumped at the chance. I love sampling new products – masks, moisturizers, cleansers. But I’ve never had someone recommend anything specifically for my skin. A professional consultation and recommendation for products? Sign me up!
As the day of my initial consultation at Bonness approached, I set some goals.
- I wanted my skin to be less red and irritated.
- I hoped I could reduce the appearance of wrinkles that were starting to develop on my forehead.
- Whatever was recommended couldn’t take a long time. Mom Life waits for no skincare routine, right?
Other than that, I was game for whatever.
My first visit started with a review of my skin and basic history (cystic acne, red and dry skin, sensitive, effects of breast cancer treatment). Alex listened and took notes. She washed my face, which was also a way to test the pH level (I passed!), then she started telling me about the hydrafacial.
The facial would serve to give me “clean slate” for the new product routine. I’ve had facials in the past at various spas and salons. But this was entirely different. It’s a “wet” facial. The wand injected hydration into my skin. As the wand passed over my skin, it felt like a cat’s tongue. It was strangely relaxing.
After the facial, Alex went into the shop to gather the products she recommended. For 90 days, I was committing to using these products as she recommended. I was a little nervous – especially when she came into the treatment room with a basket of bottles.
The great thing about working with professionals and being “prescribed” physician-grade products is that the recommendations are customized, not a one-size-fits-all approach. Alex specifically selected these products for my skin and my conditions. Your product recommendations may differ.
Here’s what my daily routine included (everything was twice daily, except the Lip System which was used three times a day and the sunscreen which was used only during the day):
Epionce Gentle Foaming Cleanser: non-drying cleanser that removes makeup and leaves skin feeling super clean
PCA Skin ExLinea Peptide Smoothing Serum: relaxes muscles, used only on forehead
Epionce Intense Defense Serum: basically, vitamins for the skin
SkinMedica Total Defense and Repair SPF 34: lightweight sunscreen for the face
Epionce Renewal Facial Lotion: lightweight moisturizer
SkinMedica HA5 Smooth and Plump Lip System: one tube smooths, one plumps lips
My routine also included two “as-needed” products:
PCA Skin Acne Cream: a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment
SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Masque: cooling and soothing mask perfect for post-sun-exposure days
So after 90 days, I learned a few things. First, skin care doesn’t have to be difficult or time consuming. Yes, I started using many more products than I used to, but after a few weeks, it just became part of my routine and didn’t notice it taking any more time. However, packing ALL that stuff for vacation requires another toiletry bag!
I was also surprised at how LITTLE product I needed to use. Alex advised just ONE pump of each of the products, and at first, I was completely skeptical. How could one LITTLE pump take care of my WHOLE face? She showed me how to pump the product on the back of my hand, use a finger from the other hand to essentially break that out by thirds – a third on each cheek and one on the forehead, and my whole face was covered!
Finally, professionally recommended skin care has benefits like working with an expert to add or change products when things aren’t working. At my two-month check-in visit, Alex added SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex to help reduce the redness of some acne spots on my jaw. (Spoiler: it’s working!)
The 90-Day Stunning Results
Holy cow! Since I see myself every day, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to see any concrete results. I knew, from about six weeks in, that my skin was softer and felt smoother. And I could tell the redness was reduced. But once I saw the photos from throughout my treatment, I could really see the difference, especially in a few key areas:
My forehead wrinkles were not as obvious. (Alex, my Bonness skincare goddess, recommends a few derma-planing sessions to continue reducing “texture irregularities” on my forehead and improve appearance.)
My eyes. Honestly, I didn’t even notice that I had wrinkles here until I saw the before pics.
My LIPS! Wow! This one was truly unexpected and amazing. The “Vermilion border” – the demarcation between your lips and the adjacent skin – was more clear. The pink of my lips seemed healthier and my lips are more full.
The Final Word
I definitely want to maintain this skin, but the cost can be intimidating. Most of the products I was given still have half a bottle left (cleanser, sunscreen, moisturizer, acne treatment, mask), while others lasted just at or under 90 days (both serums, lip treatment).
