What does racism have to do with the fact that black mothers and babies are suffering mortality rates many times worse than that of their white counterparts? In a word, EVERYTHING.
In January, we sat down with Kisha Shanks of Infinite Family Solutions, aka “The Mom Mentor,” to talk on our podcast about black maternal and infant mental health, the role systemic racism plays in maternal mortality rates, racial bias in the health care system, and so much more.
Now, more than ever, it’s crucial that parents around the country, but especially in the Milwaukee area, are aware of the startling statistics surrounding maternal and infant mortality rates and the disparities along racial lines. In fact, the average infant mortality rate in Wisconsin is 4.8 per 1,000 white infants, compared to 14.2 for African American infants. And, the maternal mortality rate in Wisconsin is five times higher for black women than for white women. Milwaukee in particular is the worst offender.
Recently, many area parents are asking, “What can I do to help?” Collectively, people across the country are looking for new ways to engage, dive in, and make a difference all the name of creating a better world for our present and especially for our kids’ futures. With that in mind….
What better way to support and elevate Black and Brown voices than by supporting their survival in the first place?
Recently, Kisha’s work with Infinite Family Solutions has QUADRUPLED. So we got in touch to see how we could offer support. Below you will find additional information on how to send donations via Venmo as well as more resources for learning about the racial disparities in maternal and infant health.
