Operation Santa : Sending Letters to Santa and Making Holiday Magic
Every year, hundreds of thousands of letters are written and sent to the North Pole with a wish and a hope that they will make their way into the hands of Santa himself. What many may not know is that many of these letters become part of the 100-year-old “Operation Santa” program of the United States Postal Service.
Through Operation Santa, the United States Postal Service makes it possible for the public to safely adopt these letters and make children’s dreams come true, sending the requested gifts in Santa’s place.
How to Send a Letter to Santa:
The USPS wants to make sure that as many letters get to Santa this year as possible! Make sure to follow these easy steps to send your letter to Santa. Santa’s mailing address should be placed in the middle of the envelope. Letters can be addressed simply to SANTA CLAUS, but they prefer his official Postal Service address:
SANTA CLAUS
123 Elf Road
North Pole 88888
Don’t forget the return address and to add a first class stamp!
How to Adopt a Letter:
Visit the official Operation Santa website to get started! December 4 is the day to start adopting letters and to catch the world premiere of Dear Santa – the documentary about this program.
Read through the letters and adopt the ones you love or that make your heart grow three sizes. Shop for the perfect gift, kept anonymous, since it’s coming from Santa! Wrap and pack your gift using the guidelines provided by Operation Santa and then drop if off at a participating Post Office to send it on its way!

“Dear Santa” will be available to stream on demand on December 4th, making it the perfect family holiday movie experience in 2020. The film goes behind the scenes of Operation Santa and reminds us of the countless acts of kindness and love that are done all around us, especially at the holidays.
Traveling the country, much like Santa does on Christmas Eve, the film focuses on select ‘Operation Santa’ Centers: some in metropolitan areas like the massive operation in New York City and others in small towns where the Post Office is the heart of the community. The film highlights letters where a child is asking for something poignant, something that goes beyond the common wish for a toy. Santa will explain how he enlists kind hearted strangers across the country for these special requests while he concentrates on toy making, and his demanding delivery schedule.
