The greater Milwaukee Area has an incredible variety of Black-Owned Businesses, from restaurants to professional services, experiences to grooming and beauty, and so much more. Since our audiences includes Milwaukee itself plus the suburbs and extended region, we want to share more about these businesses so that no matter where you live and what you are looking for, you can support them in your community.

The community is particularly indebted to the work of MKEblack.org and the incredible directory they’ve created for the city of Milwaukee. This guide will point DIRECTLY to this resource! DOWNLOAD THE APP now!

Spotlight: Paul Wellington and Rick Banks, Founders of MKE Black

Tell us more about you!
My name is Paul Wellington, and I’m the co-founder of MKE Black. I’m born and raised in Milwaukee, and work at the East Branch Library. Outside of work I’m really into LEGO architecture, and run the blog ArchBrick Daily. I also have a wife and two year old daughter.
How did MKE Black come about?
MKE Black was created in August 2019 when Rick and I realized there was not sufficient promotion of Black businesses in Milwaukee. Many visitor guides tend to focus on the East Side, Downtown, Walker’s Point, and Bay View, with little promotion of the city’s north side. Our primary goal is to showcase Black businesses and events in these neighborhoods (as well as around the area), and promote to local residents and tourists. We also provide grants, as funding dictates, and advertising to businesses.
Tell us about a particular accomplishment you are particularly proud of with MKE Black.
I’m particularly proud of publishing the app (currently only available for Android) and the recently released website. For the website I had to code a few things, which was new to me and very challenging!
Milwaukee Families, LISTEN UP!
The MKE Black business directory is a great way to discover businesses in every corner of the Milwaukee area. There are also many Black businesses and events that are family friendly! Such venues including Sherman Phoenix, Black Arts Fest, and Catch-22 Escape Rooms are great places to have fun with the family.
