A pink and purple children’s travel potty came to me as a hand me down. At the time, I thought I would have very little need for the travel potty. I didn’t know how wrong I was!
To be fair, when you’re a mom of very little children it’s hard to see past the diaper and pull up phase. The need to get to a potty in a hurry hadn’t yet come into my life. Fast forward a few years and suddenly the need was very VERY real.
So what is a children’s travel potty? It’s just as it sounds- a potty you can assemble and use on the go for your little ones (and sometimes desperate adults).
While there are several versions of the children’s travel potty, my favorite involves a frame with collapsible legs. You insert an absorbent, disposable liner into the frame and PRESTO! you have a potty. When you’re done, tie up the bag and fold up the legs. When the potty is collapsed, it’s rather flat which makes for easy car storage. (Ours fits under the passenger seat of our car.)
As many parents know, children do not often make their potty stops at the most convenient times. The first few instances we used our travel potty we were on road trips. It seemed like as soon as we passed the last sign of humanity, one my of children would have to go to the bathroom and not be able to hold it.
The travel potty allowed us to pull off the freeway, find a quiet spot on the side of the road, and set up ‘shop.’ It does take a few tries to get the hang of hooking the bag correctly around the potty frame, but once you get it assembled- you’re golden! Within moments the deed is done and you’re back on the road.
I will warn you that depending on the needs of your child, the bag can make the car stink. (Feel free to double or triple bag if needed!)
I thought that perhaps as my children got older, we would have less use for our travel potty. However, it still comes in handy for my school aged kiddos. I imagine that we will continue to use our travel potty for the next several years.
