Best “No School Today” Options for Kids in the Milwaukee Area

When the kids are out of school for the day, whether it be planned or a surprise, it can leave parents scrambling a bit for what to do to keep their young kids occupied and engaged. We’ve compiled some of our favorite local activities to do with young kids when schools are closed!

TAKE A NATURE HIKE

If the weather cooperates, having the full day off of school is the perfect opportunity to visit one of the local Nature Centers and go on a hike or enjoy some fresh air while the kiddos get the wiggles out! The Milwaukee Public Market is the perfect destination for a day off of school – there’s all sorts of food and drink options, treats and desserts, even fun little shops to explore. It’s truly a Milwaukee treasure!  

BETTY BRINN CHILDREN’S MUSEUM

Located in the heart of Milwaukee, the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum stands as a beacon of interactive learning and fun for families. With its engaging exhibits and hands-on activities, this museum provides an enriching experience tailored specifically for young children.  

MILWAUKEE PUBLIC MUSEUM

The Milwaukee Public Museum is an incredible collection of exhibits that both entertain and educate. The museum’s impressive dioramas, including the famous T-Rex, a realistic rainforest and the “street of Old Milwaukee”, provide immersive experiences that spark imagination and learning. MILWAUKEE COUNTY ZOO

Pretty much every parent in the Milwaukee area is familiar with the Milwaukee County Zoo, so expect larger crowds on days that school isn’t in session, but it’s still the perfect destination for kids of a variety of ages for a full day of fun. And if you don’t already have a Zoo Pass, be sure to check into the benefits and you and your family can enjoy the benefits all year round.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES 

Even if school is out for the day, there are still plenty of enrichment, classes, and activities for kids in the Milwaukee area. We are fortunate to have so many great options, and the purpose of this guide is to share all our community has to offer. Options include programs for all ages, budgets, and interests – sports and rec, dance, STEM, music and more! Other local fun options would include a visit to Bookworm Gardens in Sheboygan, Boerner Botanical Garden, and the Urban Ecology Center
