Get ready to lace up your sneakers and join in a beloved Milwaukee tradition! The Samson Stomp & Romp, the Milwaukee County Zoo’s annual winter event, returns for its 45th year on Sunday, January 19, 2025. This family-friendly race, presented by Prairie Farms Dairy, celebrates one of the Zoo’s most iconic residents, Samson the silverback gorilla (1950-1981), and raises funds for the care of the Zoo’s animals. Whether you’re a runner, walker, or just want to enjoy the Zoo with your loved ones, there’s something for everyone at this exciting event.

Fun for the Whole Family

While the races are a highlight, the event is much more than just a run. It’s a full day of family-friendly fun at the Milwaukee County Zoo! All registered participants, including children, are encouraged to enjoy the Zoo after the race. Plus, for every child’s registration, one accompanying adult will receive a free admission ticket to join the fun.

The 5K race will be officially timed, with results available both in-person and online after the event. Whether you’re aiming for your personal best or just taking in the sights of the Zoo as you race, you’ll be supporting the animals who call the Zoo home.

A Special Cause

Proceeds from the event directly benefit the animals at the Zoo, ensuring that all of its residents—whether big, small, furry, or scaly—receive the best care possible. This year, the event will also promote conservation efforts in an exciting new way: participants are invited to donate old cell phones at the U.S. Bank Gathering Place. The recycled cell phones will help reduce the need for coltan, a mineral mined from the forests of Congo, home to critically endangered lowland gorillas. By recycling your cell phones, you’re directly helping to protect their habitat and contribute to vital conservation efforts.

Important Event Notes

  • Race will take place rain, snow, or shine! However, the Zoo reserves the right to cancel the event in the event of severe weather or dangerous conditions. Please note that no refunds will be issued in the event of cancellation.
  • No strollers, in-line skates, or similar devices will be allowed during the races for safety reasons.
  • All races will take place along public walkways throughout the Zoo.

How to Get Involved

This winter tradition is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of community, conservation, and, of course, the incredible animals that call the Milwaukee County Zoo home. To learn more and register, visit the Zoo’s official event page at:
